Why “Whorled View”? Look at your fingerprints - if you have one with a whorled pattern you’ll see that all the lines spin inward or outward depending on your perspective. So it is with the fingerprint of mankind. We leave our fingerprint on whatever we touch, and we touch everything. Will our touch create or destroy? And why, how, what, when, and where will that touch make a difference? 15 years ago I wrote a college philosophy paper on the “is vs. the ought” that championed the idea that all moral subjectivity sits squarely on the shoulders of mankind and his application of knowledge (knowledge itself being ethically neutral). That thesis has guided my views ever since and provides much of the motivation behind efforts like this one. About me: Not that you care, but I’m a family man, business owner, church goer, and gadget lover. For hobbies I’m into gadgets, mountain biking (although haven’t done much since I moved back east in 2001), handyman-type projects, and musical instruments. I’m also deeply concerned about global ethics and the mismanagement of information and poor utilization of the best resources and technologies available for mankind. You are very welcome to hang out here and comment if you can at least be somewhat respectful.

  1. Your site is just awesome. I accidentally bumped into it while making a search for an interesting Physics homework and discovered and excellent web page full of useful content. In fact, you have inspired me to convince my parents of placing an electricity producing Solar Concentration Power plant!

  2. Sweet! CSP on a singl-home-dwelling basis is really rare - and extremely cool. I’ve been wanting to do the same, and I certainly would if I lived in a more amenable place and had the time.

You might want to check out http://wwww.redrok.com for homegrown CSP thermal units. Another good thing to see a system for under $1000: http://www.harbornet.com/sunflower/. It a little outdated website, but Doug Wood is still very active in the scene and just needs to update his website. I believe he now suggests CPV (concentrated PhotoVoltaics) - but do it yourself for huge savings and a fun project. Just make sure you keep those PV cells cold cold cold or you can burn up the costliest part of the system in less than a minutes (depending on how many suns you concentrate).
